Life's..So..Sweet

Born in Greece, late in May, in the early sixties, I made it just in time for a nice long summer and the flower power era.

As soom as I mastered walking and talking, I boarded a plane and took off for the Northwest end of the New World.
(Naturally, during the flight I tried my best to have a window opened so that I could catch some stars...This profoundly cliche desire, along with watching on T.V. the landing on the moon, and actually meeting in person a grown-up, who was working for the space programm, had led me to the conclusion, that the right thing for me to do when I grew up, was to become an astronaut...)
Vancouver was alright! The Rolling Stones came to town for a concert, while I was there; the cartoons on T.V. were great; I became bilingual really fast and took my first steps in styling and design, while rearranging my barbie dolls' hair and clothing...I drew and painted like a mad child...
For the elementary school years and part of high school, life took me back to Athens. I loved learning, so school was just another playground
for me.The best times though were had, playing out in the (empty) streets and down the creek with the neighborhood gang.
Barbie dolls were abandoned somewhere in my room...
My very own first record was given to me, as a Christmas present:
Mama's and Papa's - California Dreaming.
During highschool, passtimes became more sophisticated: Hammer radio stations were everywhere and we had one as well. When not partying we would use it to sprerad the British 70's Rock music around the aiwaves.
Sports, physics and math were my favourite subjects in highschool, nevertheless I spent a great deal of time studying religions, philosophy and world's history and cultures in order to understand everything and everybody around me.
Erich Von Dainiken's books became my favourite reading.
During this time period I painted a lot...mostly flying saucers and space scenery...
Partying intensified during the summer months: during the seventies in Greece, clubs and bars were open all night and some of them were right next to the beach!...we hardly got any sleep while exploring the nightlife of Athens and the islands.
At fifiteen, I visited Holland and this increased mey desire to know the world and meet people of various backgrounds. Luckily, the next year I was on a plane again, once more going to Vancouver, for my last highschool years. Along with me, came my Sex Pistols record and my "punked-up" barbie dolls. In my new enviroment, I had a chance to compare notes with my new friends and classmates, on teenage issues around the world.

From this time on, a travelling patern developed and I was able to keep sociable and productive, both in Canada and Greece.
(The astronaut dream was not forgotten, but abandoned, realizing that there was enough for me to do, underneath the Earth's stratosphere.)
Although occasionally holding jobs of greater or lesser importance and status, it was creative projects that I found to be interesting and rewarding. After a fashion design/merchindising course, I worked for a Vancouver designer of theatre costumes and elaborate fashions. On my own, I prefered working in making costumes and extreme fashions for the sub-culture.
Having friends in various parts of the world, I managed to continue travelling, visiting a few major cities of Europe and North America. Once there, neighborhoods were explored, museums visited, cafes' and restaurants' goods were taste sampled, concerts were attended and bars and clubs welcomed us quite regularly.
For more exotic experiences, I ventured to the Far East and Southern Hemishere and when nostalgia hit, I returned to explore once more my homeland's sunny islands.
All this geographical and multicultural exposure, influenced my personal choices, taste and point of view. It offered variety and confidence in my creative expression and endless inspiration.

The last few years I am stationed in Athens, leading a humble life, restraing my travelling to the occasional few day visit in close by destinations, around Greece and Europe. I paint more than I design and I have become extremely depended on music. Through schooling, private tutoring and internet forums, I learn as much as possible about the music I like: the inspiration and technical part of making it, as well as the history behind it all and today's news. Attending concerts is a nessecity for me and I pay a lot of attention and care in increasing my record and CD collection.
It's not surprising that for now, most of my paintings are about musicians in action.

Sometimes, to humor myself, on a clear night I go star-gazing and remembering my old dream, I momentarily astrotravel...
