Rocky..Horrror..Show/
Lykabetus..Theatre/Athens..Sept2005
Is everyone familiar with Rocky Horror?
The authentic London West End production, took place here, in Athens,
performing in Lykabetus theatre for four evenings: 14-17 September.
(Lykabetus theatre is located on the top of a hill, in the centre of
Athens, a popular place for summer events and concerts).
Having already seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show, quite a few years
back, I went to this show well prepared: I put on my Rocky Horror
clothing gear and made sure to take with me all the necessary
accesories: water pistol, rice, toilet paper, surgical rubber gloves,
feather boa...my make up was ample and colorful, all set for the
evening's participation...
Although it was raining all day on Thursday the 15th (the day that
I chose to go), and it was still drizzling by the time the show was
about to begin, the theatre was almost full and everyone was looking
forward to the evening.
Well, the story in brief,is this: The naive, nerdy couple Brad and
Janet, drive in the wildriness and rain, when their car breaks down.
They knock on the door of Dr. Frunk N Furter's mansion, asking for
help and once inside , they get a very unique welcome by Master and
Slaves sex fiends...Dr Frunk N Furter is a transexual alien, and a
mad scientist as well, who has created the creature called Rocky. His
mansion's slaves are there to do as he pleases; the predominant
outfit for everyone in the house is tight corsets and garderbelts
with fishnet stockings to suit the naughty love games.
All of this come to an end, when the space capsule lands: the
brother and sister space commanders come to the mansion, zap Dr. Frank
N Furter and Rocky to their death and everyone else, Slaves and the
not so innocent anymore, but still nerdy, Brad and Janet, are set free
to do what they please.
The shows production was suberb! The set simple, and with the right
lighting it was very-very effective. The actors gave a great performance,
flowing and dancing across the stage, singing with their great voices,
occasionally joking with the audience, us! The narrator chose to use some
greek words and phrases in his monologues, making his story telling even
funnier... of course, this didn't stop us from shouting "boring" everytime
he was on. Enjoying the show, didn't stop us from shouting obsene names to
Janet and Brad; we threw the toilet paper all over, zapped along with our
water pistols and did everything else that the Rocky Horror tradition dictated.
At the end of the show , we applauded for the longest time everyone on
stage, including the live electric band, that played along during the show
and framed the singing with their sounds.
